What JSON minification does
Minifying JSON removes every space, tab and line break that is not part of a string value. The data does not change, only its size. Because the text is parsed first, the minifier also tells you if the input is not valid JSON.
When to minify JSON
- API payloads and responses, where fewer bytes mean faster transfers.
- Config values stored in environment variables, database columns or query strings.
- Fixtures and snapshots that you want on a single line.
For human-readable files such as config in a repository, keep the formatted version and minify only at build or request time.
Minify or gzip
Minifying and compression work together. Gzip or Brotli already shrink repeated whitespace well, so the extra saving from minifying a compressed response is small. Minifying matters most when the JSON is not compressed, for example in a URL, a cookie or a text field with a size limit.
